Buick unveiled the 2018 Regal GS. It is available on the sportback platform, thus far (wagon please?). Other notable changes include standard AWD and upgrading from the I4 259 hp motor to the 310hp VVT V6 most likely from the LaCrosse. I hope it doesn’t have the same power curve...

Regal GS in green, LaCrosse in Blue

It looks fantastic. My only real dislike is the liftback, it just doesn’t jive with me; however... since GM is going through all the effort of bringing the wagon, might as well bring a few of these too

Kinja'd!!!

EDIT: I just realized that the V6 is not turbocharged, from what I can tell. That is an interesting move...

Are you sure about the V6? Because today also the Opel/Vauxhall Insignia GSi was revealed, which keeps the already available I4 engine with AWD, and only adds sporty bumpers(same as on this Buick) and better suspension.

Edit: nevermind this comment, the US does indeed get the V6.

Kia Stinger GT says - LOL

Kinja'd!!!

Really it only has 310 hp? (insane saying that, but that’s the times).

When Kia is putting out an RWD/AWD 4 door lift back with 365 HP and brembo brakes you better make sure your Buick can hang.

I’ve never wanted a Kia so badly.

Liftback is better than sedan.

Closest competitor in terms of specs (if not liftbackiness) is the Acura TLX SH-AWD. Similar NA V6 and torque vectoring awd.

I’m mildly disappointed it doesn’t have some kind of turbo V6 for extra torque and tuning capability.

GM only offers the 3.6TT V6 with a minimum of 410 hp in assorted Cadillacs. A smaller turbo V6 like Ford’s 2.7T V6 would make sense between the 2.0T and 3.6TT but the 3.6 NA V6 occupies that spot. They used to have the Saab 2.8T V6 but that motor was very unreliable and was phased out in favor of the 3.6 NA V6.

I’m curious to see how the price lines up with the TLX SH-AWD and the Kia Stinger with the twin turbo V6.

As for the wagon, I doubt we’ll see it in the US in any kind of non-Outbacktified form.

Yep, and for those looking it is in the performance tab of the Regal GS web page.

I agree with you, but the Regal GS does also have Brembos.

It looks pretty good. I don’t mind the lift back. The only thing is, it looks a little more cab-forward than I would like.

Well this is GM, they have to screw something up. I do like the Stinger and if/when it comes out it will be very tempting...

I wanted it up until I saw it in person at the auto show. Some of the build were just... cheap. I mean they can’t even hide the sensors properly, it’s a printed piece of plastic.

Car manufacturers have realized that fancy brakes are an appealing selling point to enthusiast, and a way to differentiate that a car is in fact sporty.

I’ll always take better brakes if they’re available, within reason. Ceramic brakes have super high replacement costs, but often the cars that offer them also have high replacement costs on their standard brakes that still have large multi-piston calipers and 2-piece rotors.

Oh yeah, I agree completely. I just upgraded the brakes on my Milan. It’s always better to have more brake than you need than not enough.

Just super disappointed in the engine choice from Buick.

Yeah, I didn’t realize that the V6 wasn’t turbocharged, that seems very strange to me. It is especially unusual because they are making AWD standard so you are not limited by FWD versions. They could definitely add some more horses.

Prices will probably be asinine because Buick. The current gen is between 35k-40k. I wouldn’t expect this to be different.

We can wish for the wagon. I can dream Harold!

The lift back is just one of those things I need to see before I make a firm judgement. It just looks strange on the little animation. Plus the 5 series GT didn’t help.

Re: the liftback. The old Regal’s trunk opening wasn’t all that big. We looked at it for kid hauling duties, but couldn’t get our stroller in despite the trunk being plenty large. So the liftback solves this issue. FWIW, Cadillac is even worse. The trunk opening on the CTS might as well be a mail slot.

I am not arguing the utility value of the liftback, it is by far superior to a normal trunk, it is just everytime I hear leftback the 5GT comes to mind, that thing was just gross.

Kinja'd!!!

Speaking of mail slot...

Yeah, the angles can do weird things in 2D. My RX-8 was like that. Gorgeous in person, not so much online, from certain angles especially.
